7 Dec 2023
Please see below to help you prepare for the change in the law to XL bully dogs.
From 31 December it will be against the law to sell, abandon, give away or breed an XL bully dog.
From 1 February 2024, it will be a criminal offence to own an XL Bully dog in England without a Certificate of Exemption, which must be applied for by 31 January 2024.
The guidance also advises that to keep an XL Bully dog it must be microchipped, kept on a lead and muzzled when in public, kept in a secure place and be neutered, and that an owner must be over 16, have specific third-party public liability insurance and be able to show the Certificate of Exemption.
Full guidance can be found on the Government website: https://www.gov.uk/guidance/prepare-for-the-ban-on-xl-bully-dogs
At Acis, our stance is to work in line with the guidance published by the government.
Where the guidance is followed, it will take precedence over the clauses in our tenancy agreements. We'll therefore allow owners to keep their XL bully dogs providing the guidance is followed in full.
