Christmas can be a lonely time of the year for some people. And with the pandemic presenting further challenges, it’s no secret that more people are feeling alone and isolated.
If you suspect your neighbour is struggling or feeling lonely this festive season, why not check in?
From a simple post of a Christmas card through the letter box to a knock at the door, share the Christmas cheer with your neighbour.
Check that your neighbour is warm and their home is at least 18 Celsius.
Check that your neighbour has eaten warm food or had a warm drink.
Check to see if your neighbour needs shopping.
Check to see if they take medication and if they have enough to last them when the GPs are shut. If not, offer to go with them to collect it or if not mobile offer to collect it for them.
Check to chat. Sometimes your neighbour will just want company.
Don’t worry if you can’t do much. The smallest gesture can make a big difference in your neighbour's life.
So, give them a Christmas card or write down your phone number so that you can remain socially distant and still check in over the phone.
If you are collecting their shopping but remaining socially distant, wear a face covering if possible, leave their shopping near the front door, knock loud enough so they can hear, step back at least two meters and wait for them to open the door.
You can even show them different social groups and activities they can attend after Christmas to find new friends, hobbies and happiness. For more information on social groups and activities in your local area visit: https://www.connecttosupport.org/s4s/
