Steps is a programme designed to help people in West Lindsey progress and move forward. Whether that's through achieving meaningful employment, accessing further training, returning to education or gaining the confidence they need to reach their goals. Gary took redundancy from his previous job and wanted a change, the last time he had applied for a job it was through newspaper ads and job websites were only just coming into existence. Gary joined the steps programme (funded by West Lindsey District Council) at Riverside Training in Gainsborough and has had great success. I recently sat down with Gary to chat about his employment journey, read below to find out more.

Away from your studies at Riverside Training, what are your hobbies and interests?

I am very much into aviation, I take part in World War Two reenactments and I’m very much into photography, steam engines of all descriptions and socialising.

How did find out about the steps and employability support at Riverside?

I popped into CLIP (The Bridge) in Gainsborough and asked for support, they directed me to Riverside so I rang up and made enquiries. I needed help in the search for jobs as it’s been so long since I was unemployed, the last time I needed a job you looked in the newspaper. I came in for a chat and met Jo and Michael and told them what I wanted, or what I needed should I say. Jo Marsh (Engagement and Support Coach) signposted me to their employability course.

What support have you received from Riverside as part of these courses?

Jo and Michael (Talboys, Tutor at Riverside Training) helped me to put together my CV and signposted me to job websites, such as Indeed. I had difficulties with some online applications and Jo and Michael helped me get online and to get all my details sorted so that I could apply for a job at the council.

Riverside Training help people realise their potential through skills training, qualifications and employability support. They serve up a wide range of opportunities for you to develop yourself, discover something new and improve your wellbeing.

What courses are you studying next?

I’m currently studying the mindfulness course at Riverside which includes two sessions that are three hours each. I’ve enjoyed it, everyone was very interactive and chatty and put in their opinions and ideas, the sessions were really good.

What would you say to anyone unsure about signing up for courses at Riverside?

Talk to the staff at Riverside, it doesn’t take long to see what they can offer. If you end up joining you won’t regret it! I find the people that work there are very positive and very helpful. It’s a real can-do attitude here that I like. If you’re not sure, come along and find out for yourself.

What are your long-term goals and next steps after completion of these courses?

To get through an interview with a positive outcome. I’ve done a lot of shift work, so a 9am to 5pm Monday to Friday would be nice.

Since completing his courses at Riverside Training and just a couple of weeks after our conversation, Gary has successfully secured himself a role as a school minibus driver 25 hours a week. Jo Marsh, Engagement and Support Coach at Riverside, shared her delight for Gary’s success “'We are really proud of the work and progress Gary has made during his time engaging with Riverside. His willingness to learn has enabled him to make his next step back into employment'

Congratulations Gary!
