Creating a Curriculum vitae (CV) without any formal work experience can feel like a huge challenge. It's easy to worry about what to include, especially when most job adverts seem to require years of experience. But don’t stress, there are ways to create a standout CV even if you’re just starting your career. Recently at our Tuesday morning "Perfect Your CV” session, one of our participants wasn’t sure how to create a CV without having any work experience. Read our top tips below to see how we tailored our support to help them create a CV.
1. Highlight Your Education
A degree, coursework, and any academic achievements are valuable. Mention specific projects or coursework that relate to the job you’re applying for.
2. Emphasize Transferable Skills
Even without formal job experience, you’ve likely developed skills through volunteering or extracurricular activities. Think about communication, teamwork, leadership, and problem-solving skills.
3. Include Any Volunteering
Any volunteer role can be used to show real-world experience. These positions demonstrate your work ethic and dedication.
4. Add a Strong Personal Statement
Start your CV with a personal statement emphasising your enthusiasm for the role and willingness to learn. It’s your chance to make a positive first impression.
5. Showcase Online Courses & Certifications
If you’ve completed any relevant online courses or earned certifications, include them. It shows initiative and commitment to developing your skills.
Remember, everyone has to start somewhere. Focus on your strengths and potential, and you will be sure to catch an employer’s attention. If you would like tailored support, you’re more than welcome to drop by for a chat and to ask us any questions, we’ll have a nice warm cup of tea or coffee waiting for you.
