It’s really scary to think about being left out of things or worrying about not being able to make friends, especially as you might be moving to a totally different city.
But you’ll absolutely make friends, there’s lots of opportunity! Here are some tips to help you on your way…
Get involved
Be sure to get involved in things you enjoy, that way you’re more likely to meet like-minded people who you get on with straight away. It’s also a good way of getting involved in uni life and just getting used to meeting lots of new people regularly.
Whether it’s local student events within the city or society welcome groups, make sure you don’t miss out on great opportunities. Don’t forget to take full advantage of freshers week too!

Put yourself out there
Don’t be afraid to just be yourself. You’re not going to get along with everyone and that’s ok, but by just being yourself, you’re more likely to make long lasting friendships. Everyone will appreciate you for just being you, and you’ll soon establish where you fit in.
Make sure you hang out in common spaces, you’ll soon get chatting to others around you. Or even make a group chat with people from your course? You can see who wants to go for a coffee between lectures or what everyone’s up to at the weekend.
But don’t get stuck with one group of friends, being close with your flat is great, but make sure you mingle and have lots of friendship groups, that way you’ll be more likely to always have someone to hang out with.
Be brave and approachable
Don’t shy away from making the first move amongst a group. Whether it be your course mates, flat mates, or a new society group you’ve joined.
It might even help to have a few basic questions ready to ask, should you get stuck for things to say. Here’s some ideas:
- What course are you studying?
- Are you local to the area?
- Have you joined any societies yet?
